At the heart of the ELD-X® bullet is Hornady’s patented Heat Shield® tip, engineered to resist the effects of aerodynamic heating during flight. Unlike traditional polymer tips that can deform under extreme velocity and rotational forces, the Heat Shield® tip retains its shape to maintain a consistent meplat and preserve the bullet’s exceptionally high ballistic coefficient throughout its trajectory.
The streamlined secant ogive profile, optimized boattail design, and highly concentric AMP® bullet jackets combine with the Heat Shield® tip to create a supremely accurate hunting projectile capable of match-grade precision. Ballistic coefficients are verified using Doppler radar and corrected to standard atmospheric conditions for true real-world performance.
Terminal Performance:
At conventional hunting distances with higher impact velocities (0–400 yards), the ELD-X® bullet delivers rapid and continuous expansion throughout the penetration path. The thick rear jacket shank and InterLock® ring help retain the core and jacket together, typically providing 50–60% weight retention for deep penetration and devastating energy transfer.
At extended distances with lower impact velocities (400+ yards), the Heat Shield® tip is driven rearward into the bullet upon impact, initiating controlled expansion. The result is a large mushroom profile, deep penetration, and significant wound cavities while maintaining approximately 85–90% retained weight.
