At the heart of the ELD-X® bullet is Hornady’s patented Heat Shield® tip, engineered to resist deformation caused by aerodynamic heating during flight. Unlike conventional polymer tips that can soften and lose shape at extended ranges, the Heat Shield® tip maintains a perfectly consistent meplat, preserving ballistic coefficient and maximizing downrange accuracy.

The bullet’s streamlined secant ogive profile, optimized boattail design, and highly concentric AMP® bullet jackets work together to create a supremely accurate, high-BC projectile capable of excellent wind resistance and consistent long-range performance. Hornady verifies ELD-X® ballistic coefficients using Doppler radar and corrects them to standard atmospheric conditions for true real-world performance data.

Terminal performance is equally impressive across both conventional and extended hunting distances.

At higher impact velocities from approximately 0–400 yards, the ELD-X® bullet delivers rapid and continuous expansion throughout the penetration path. The thick rear jacket shank and InterLock® ring help retain the core and jacket together, typically providing 50–60% retained weight for deep penetration and massive energy transfer.

At extended distances beyond 400 yards where impact velocities are lower, the Heat Shield® tip is driven rearward into the bullet to initiate controlled expansion. This produces a large mushroom profile with 85–90% retained weight, allowing for deep penetration and significant wound cavities on game animals.
